Mary Moore

From 1965-67, I studied theatre design at the Central School of Art, London. After graduating, I designed productions for The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Royal Court Theatre, The Mermaid Theatre, and many of the repertory companies and alternative theatre companies in the UK. In 1979, I was a member of the British Design Team that won the Golden Triga at the 4th Prague Quadrennial International Exhibition of Scenography.

Since making my home in Adelaide in 1981, I have designed over a hundred opera, dance and theatre productions around Australia. In1996, I was awarded an Australia Council Fellowship to create two experimental works: Masterkey, an Australian/Japanese intercultural work that integrated live performance with video and installation art (commissioned by Perth and Adelaide Festivals, 1998); and Exile, an immersive installation designed for the Japanese butoh performer, Tomiko Takai (Sydney Spring and Shanghai Festivals 2000).

In 2001, I was commissioned by the Centenary Celebration Committee of South Australia to direct and design The Memory Museum, a site specific, live performance, multi-media, promenade environment at the Drill Hall on the Torrens Parade Ground, Adelaide.

From 2004-7, I was a participating artist with the first Australia Council National Cultural Diversity Cluster and created “memento mori”, an in-the-round video installation, for Undiscovered Country (Oz Asia Festival 2007).

My recent production designs include Monument, a contemporary dance work inspired by the architecture of New Parliament House (Australian Ballet 2013) and The Philip Glass Trilogy: Akhnaten, Einstein on the Beach, and Satyagraha (State Opera of South Australia 2014).

Since 2014, I have been pursuing my interest in Intaglio printmaking; transitioning my work from 3D to 2D is a fascinating challenge.
